Bunchberry
10-20 cm tall, perennial herb. Spreads from underground rhizomes.
Flowers: Small, white, 4 petals in solitary clusters.
Fruits: Bright red, pulpy in clusters at the stem tip. Mid to late summer.
Habitat: upland forests and hardwood and conifer swamps.
Fruits eaten by some song birds, grouse and chipmunks. Fruits sometimes used in
puddings but are bland and somewhat mealy. Is said to have been used to treat colds,
and a tea made from its roots had been used as a remedy for colic in infants.
